Mrs. Winifred D’mello, age 97, of Danbury Connecticut , passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 16, 2025. Winifred was preceded in death by her husband, Charles D’mello on December 27 1987.
She was born on October 12, 1927 in Mumbai, India; the daughter of the late Dominic and Annie George.
Winifred is survived by two sons, Bosco D’mello of Danbury, CT and his wife Mary D'mello, Lyndon D’mello and his wife Brenda D'mello of Auckland, New Zealand and two daughters, Fidelia Abba and her husband Rufus Abba of Danbury, CT and Gwendolyn Davidson and her husband, Gordon Davidson of Danbury, CT, grandchildren Andrea and husband Eric Peterson, Caroline and husband Andreas Klaube , Crystal, Daylyn and husband Rex and Tanya and her great grandchildren, Nyla, Shylo and Scarlett.
Everyone that knew her called her Winnie. She was a teacher by profession and later opened her own nursery school. She was loved and respected by her students and parents. She was very active in the Lions Club as well. Winnie moved to the United States in 1994.
She taught knitting at the Senior Center of Danbury for many years. She loved going to the senior center and often spoke of the fun activities provided by the center and the wonderful people and staff she met. She won several awards at the Bridgewater Country Fair for knitting, embroidery and sewing. She was awarded the Presidential Award for Community Service.
Family and friends will be received on Friday, February 21, 2025 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Jowdy-Kane Funeral Home; 9 Granville Avenue, Danbury. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, February 22, 2025 at 10:00 AM in Saint Peter Church; 121 Main Street, Danbury. Interment will follow in Wooster Cemetery, Danbury.
