Wellington J. Carvalho

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Wellington Carvalho, 79 years of age, on Sept.10, 2022.  He was a 50-year resident of Ridgefield and had many friends in town. He was the husband of Barbara Schneller Carvalho and father of Peter (Elisa Davey) and Yvonne (Brian Tennant).

Wellington was born in Tanzania, Africa. He was the 6th of eight children born to Tomas and Antonieta Carvalho, who had emigrated from Goa, India. He was very proud of his family culture from Goa and Tanzania. He even wrote a family history describing how the family eventually spread all over the world. He and his brothers and sisters attended boarding school from a young age at St. Joseph’s School in Dar es Salaam and were very close. He eventually won a scholarship to Manhattan College in NY where he earned his BS in Engineering. Afterwards, he received his MS/Engineering from Iowa State University.

It was while he attended college that he met Barbara and they eventually married and finally moved to Ridgefield. Wellington was a Professional Engineer and specialized in civil engineering/water. He spent many years working for various school systems in NY; educating the children, school staff and community about the need to protect our water sources.

Wellington was a true family man; he cherished both his and Barbara’s families and was in constant contact with them sharing joys and sorrows. He was enormously proud of his children, their spouses and especially his beloved grandchildren: Joseph and Isabella Carvalho and Niall, Reece and Isaac Tennant. He valued his friends and enjoyed keeping in touch with school friends, neighbors and those made through work.

He enjoyed many and varied interests like gardening, music and especially travelling around the world to visit his far-flung family and exploring new places with his wife and friends. He was a generous and friendly person and will be missed by all who knew him.

The family wishes to thank Praxair Oncology Dept, RVNA and the health aides from Visiting Angels and Honey Bee Home Care for the care provided to Wellington.  Funeral services will be private, with a memorial service to be held in the future.
