Sylvia H. Schuster, 87, of Ridgeeld, died peacefully on Wednesday, December 11, 2024. She was the loving wife of F. George Schuster.
Mrs. Schuster was born on July 12, 1937 in Corning, NY; a daughter of the late Hildegard (Lesche) Hyde and Dr. J. Franklin Hyde.
The family owned a cottage at Keuka Lake, one of the Finger Lakes, where Sylvia spent her summers. Because of her dad’s job transfer, she left Corning from middle school and moved to Midland, Michigan where she completed high school and graduated from the University of Michigan as a registered nurse.
After working at the Michigan Medical Center Hospital, she moved to California and worked at Stanford University Hospital in Palo Alto. She later moved to San Francisco where she was employed at St. Francis Hospital. She met her future husband at the Treasure Island Officer’s Club in Oakland, California when he was on his way to Vietnam. When he returned they agreed to marry and move to Ridgefield in 1969.
She raised her two children, Katherine and Thomas, and was a devoted wife and mother. Mrs. Schuster enjoyed flowers and nature. She travelled extensively with her husband, George.
Mrs. Schuster is survived by her husband of 55 years, George, as well as their son, Thomas Schuster and his partner, Jon Pede. Mrs. Schuster is also survived by her nieces Sonia Ippoli, Andrea Rowan, Kymberly Webb, nephew Russell Schuster, and their respecve families. Mrs. Schuster was predeceased by her daughter, Katherine Schuster; her brother, Dr. James Hyde; and her sister, Ann Hyde.
Family and friends will be received on Monday, December 16, 2024 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Kane Funeral Home; 25 Catoonah Street, Ridgeeld. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, December 17, 2024 at 10:00 AM in Saint Mary’s Church; 55 Catoonah Street, Ridgeeld. Interment will follow in Saint Mary’s Cemetery; 110 North Street, Ridgeeld.
