Robert C. Wirag, 100, of Danbury, died peacefully on Wednesday, May 14, 2025. He was the loving husband of the late Ellamae (Peeler) Wirag.
Mr. Wirag was born on February 17, 1925 in Montrose, NY; a son of the late John and Dorothea (Outhouse) Wirag. His parents moved the family to Danbury when he was 2 years old, where he remained a resident for 98 years. He graduated from Danbury High School in 1943, and subsequently joined the US Army where he served in the 568th AAA Battery in Europe during WWII. He returned from Europe in 1946, and was honorably discharged. He married Ellamae Peeler, the love of his life, in July 1948.
A longtime resident of Danbury, Mr. Wirag was a retired Letter Carrier for the United States Postal Service. He was a faithful member of Saint James Episcopal Church, Danbury. He was a member of the local VFW; the Danbury Oldtimers Athletic Association; and in later years, enjoyed spending time at Richter Park golfing, and assisting with Senior tournaments, where he loved meeting old friends, and making many new acquaintances.
Mr. Wirag is survived by his beloved family all of whom he loved dearly, including daughters Cathy Matusz (& husband William), and Lisa Casanova (& boyfriend Jim Spada). In addition he is survived by his grandchildren: David Matusz, Heather Smith (Tim), Gregory Matusz (Anna), Joseph Casanova (Karin), and Christopher Casanova (Alyssa). Mr. Wirag is also survived by his great grandchildren: Audrey, TJ, Zakery, Ellia, and Daniel.
In addition to his parents, and his wife, Ellamae, Mr. Wirag was predeceased by his brother John Harold Wirag.
A funeral service will take place on Saturday, May 24, 2025 at 10:15 AM in Saint James Church; 25 West Street; Danbury. Interment with US Army funeral honors will follow in Saint Peter Cemetery; 71 Lake Avenue Extension, Danbury.
Family and friends will be received on Saturday, May 24, 2025 from 8:30 AM to 9:45 AM at Jowdy-Kane Funeral Home; 9 Granville Avenue, Danbury.
