Robert Gulya Obituary

Robert J. (Bob) Gulya, 94, of Danbury, died on Tuesday, May 31, 2022.

Bob was born in Danbury on October 1, 1927, a son to the late Andrew W. and Elizabeth (Semek) Gulya. He was educated in the Danbury School System and graduated from Danbury High School. Bob received a Bachelor of Science degree from Danbury State Teachers College, now Western Connecticut State University, and his Master of Arts degree from Columbia University in the City of New York. He retired in 1988 after 36 years of teaching. He taught his first year in Hamden and the next 35 years in Danbury, of which the last 25 years were at Great Plain School.

Bob was a life member of the CT Education Association with his name on the Life Membership plaque at CEA Headquarters in Hartford. He was also a life member of the Association of Retired Teachers of CT.

A veteran of WWII and the Korean War, he served with the United States Marine Corps attaining the rank of Sergeant. Bob received the WWII Victory Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and the CT Veterans Wartime Service Medal. He was a life member and past commander of the Marine Corps League Hat City Detachment, a life member of the Joseph A. Treadwell Post #60 American Legion of Danbury, serving as Chaplain from 2000 until 2011, and a member of the 531 Grey Ghost Squadron.

He was also a member of the United Methodist Church.

The family would like to express their appreciation to Suzanne, his wonderful home companion, the outstanding staff at Spring Village Assisted Living for their exceptional kindness and support, and the nursing staff on 10 East at Danbury Hospital for their excellent care and communication. and to Dana on 11 East at Danbury Hospital for her extraordinary compassionate care.

He is survived by nieces and nephews, William, Thomas, Mary, Dorathea, Helen, Paul, Jean, David, and Jeffrey. He is also survived by his beloved cousin Joyce and her son James.

In addition to his parents, Bob was predeceased by his twin brother Donald and his brother William. Friends will be received in the Jowdy-Kane Funeral Home, 9 Granville Ave., Danbury on Tuesday, June 7, 2022, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Funeral services will take place immediately following the period of visitation with the Rev. Father Paul A. Gulya, nephew of the deceased officiating.

Interment will follow in Wooster Cemetery, Danbury with military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion, Post 60, 138 Triangle St. Danbury or, because of his great love for dogs, or to Animal Aid USA at www.animalaidusa.org
