Raymond Byrne Jr. Obituary

Raymond Byrne passed on to heaven on July 27, 2024. He was 84 years old. Ray was born in Yonkers, NY to Raymond and Helen Byrne. He graduated from Sacred Heart High School. After high school, Ray enlisted in the US Air Force, where he worked in the 379th A&E on maintenance of B-52s in the Strategic Air Command, and also installed communication equipment in Vietnam in the very early days.  After the service, he came back to NY and started work at General Precision, and then a long career in the Bell system.  Ray met his wife Maria at a party in Yonkers. A few years after, they moved up to Mahopac to raise their family.

Ray was a real family man, and would do anything to support his wife and kids.  When the phone company went on strike, he worked as a golf caddy by day and a bartender by night to keep a decent income.  He had a dozen hobbies, loved to do home improvement projects and work on cars, played and coached sports, and led Boy Scouts.  He kept up a garden, and was proud of his lawn. He planned great vacations.  He loved puzzles and game shows - and he loved Maria’s cookies.

Ray worked for the NY Telephone Company most of his career.  Although he enjoyed the work he did, he really liked the people he worked with.  He played softball with his co-workers for years, first on the Swine, then the Darts.  They had cookouts and family days where they let the kids join the game.  Ray was also a long-time parishioner at St. John the Evangelist RC Church, in Mahopac.

After the passing of his wife Maria, Ray had been in assisted living in Ridgefield, CT.  He is survived by his three children David (and wife Audrey), Regina (and husband Greg), and Daniel (and wife Danielle), and six grandchildren - Nathan (and wife Madison), Henry, Anya, Christopher, Matthew, and Meghan. He is also survived by his step-mother Hazel, brother Paul, sisters Mary and Jayne, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Ray’s family will have a small gathering of family to celebrate his life.
