Peter Moritz

Peter Moritz, 91, of Ridgefield, CT, husband of the late Irene Lilienstein Le Gac Moritz, passed away on May 27, 2026, at Danbury Hospital after a brief illness.

Peter was born in Freiburg, Germany, on April 25, 1935, son of Egon and Ilse (Rosenstihl) Moritz. With his sisters Inge and Christel, Peter grew up in war-torn Germany on his family's horse-back riding school. He lost his father, a WWII fighter pilot, at the age of 5, and was thereafter raised by his widowed mother and her sisters, Maria and Lilo. Peter attended schools in Germany and immigrated to the United States, first settling in Elmira, NY, where he had spent his senior high school year and fallen in love with America. He served four years in the Army to gain his citizenship.

A Ridgefield resident since 1978, he worked at IBM. An expert horseman, Peter excelled in dressage and was a long-time member of the Golden's Bridge Hounds Hunt Club; and, with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, also served a term as Head of the Second Company Governor’s Horse Guard, where he continued to volunteer for many years.

He met his wonderful French wife, Irene, in his hometown of Freiburg. They were married for 63 years. Irene predeceased him in 2020.

Peter is survived by a daughter, Beatrice, of New York; a son, Patrick, and three grandchildren, Alison, Andy, and Antinea, of Paris. 

A graveside service will take place on Wednesday, July 15, 2026 at 4:00 PM in Ridgebury Cemetery, Ridgefield.
