Ottilie Komendarek, 91, a longtime New Fairfield resident, passed away peacefully on January 3rd, 2021.
She was born in Walldorf, Germany on January 5, 1929, to Ernst and Katharine (Pons) Becker, where she and her family lived through WWII.
After the war ended, she met Anthony (Tony) Komendarek, an American who served in the military and was stationed in Germany. They were married on November 5, 1949, and moved to the US. They lived in Buffalo, NY for 12 years, and then bought their own home in Sanborn, NY. They lived there for 35 years, raising their daughter, Kathryn, and enjoying the companionship of their German Shepherds and cats.
Ottilie was affectionately known as “Margie“ to all, and as “Omi” to her grandchildren. Margie was a part-time homemaker and part-time bookkeeper for her husband's various businesses. After Tony passed away in 1996, Margie moved to New Fairfield to be near family. She enjoyed being close to her grandchildren and helping out whenever she could.
She joined the Senior Center and started acrylic painting at the age of 70. The beautiful pictures were hung all over “Omi's house”. In later years, she fought a difficult battle with dementia.
She will be fondly remembered for her kind heart, her love of music, and her love of animals.
Margie is survived by her daughter Kathryn Waters (husband, Lawrence) of New Fairfield, granddaughter Corinne Waters, of Westbrook, ME, grandson Alexander Waters of New Fairfield, her brother Lothar Becker (wife, Sally) of West Seneca, NY, as well as a niece, two nephews, and 10 great-nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, and her husband Tony.
The family would like to thank the caregivers Margie had at home the past few years, and the staff at Regional Hospice who were very caring to Margie in her final days.
Due to the concerns about social gatherings affecting us all at this time, there will be no calling hours. Graveside services and interment will be conducted in Mountain View Cemetery, New Fairfield, on Thursday, January 14 at 1:30 pm. All are welcome to attend and are required to wear masks and maintain social distance.
