Nicholas Kangos, 95, of Newtown, CT died peacefully on Friday, April 25, 2025, while surrounded by his family. Prior to residing in Newtown, Nicholas (affectionately known as “Nick” or “Nicky”) lived in Jackson and Holmdel, NJ; and Long Island, NY. He was the loving husband of the late Florence (Nickolaus) Kangos.
Nicholas was born in New Brunswick, NJ on November 12, 1929; the son of the late John and Theodocia (Economides) Kangos. He grew up in Washington Heights, NY. There he attended George Washington High School and graduated from the City College of New York with a business degree in 1951. Following graduation, Nick entered the US Army and served from 1951 to 1953, stationed in Germany. After leaving the Army, he joined Abraham and Straus Department Stores as an executive trainee, where he spent a 35 year career. Nick played a key role in the company’s expansion and retired as a Vice President.
In 1954, Nick married the love of his life, Flo. They were married for over 62 years.
In his spare time, Nick enjoyed golf, painting and woodworking, among other hobbies. He was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and Knicks. Nick also enjoyed sharing his many crafts and entertaining his family and friends with tricks and games. After his retirement, Nick was active in S.C.O.R.E. (Senior Core of Retired Executives) and was a past member of the Bayshore Community Hospital and Middlesex College Boards in New Jersey.
Nicholas is survived by his three children: Jon Kangos and his wife, Christine; George Kangos and his wife, Rebecca; and Caryn Flannery. Nick is also survived by his grandchildren: Timothy Kangos and his wife, Samantha; Nicole Kangos and her husband, Michael Miller; Steven Kangos and his wife, Margaret; Jennifer Flannery, and Frederick Flannery III and his fiancé, Lauren Vetter. In addition, Mr. Kangos is survived by three great grandchildren: Olivia, Madison and Lily Kangos.
In addition to his parents and his wife, Florence, Nick was predeceased by his sister, Helen Delegianis, and his son in law, Frederick Flannery Jr.
Nick was a past member of the Kimisis Tis Theotokou Greek Orthodox Church of Holmdel, NJ and a member of the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church of Danbury, CT.
Memorial services will be held at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church and Saint Peter Cemetery in Danbury on Thursday, May 1, 2025. Family and friends will be received at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church from 10:00 - 11:00 AM, followed by the memorial service. Interment will follow at Saint Peter Cemetery, 71 Lake Avenue Extension.
