Mary M. Lohan (Maureen), 79, was residing at Braemar Assisted Living in Middletown, NY. She passed away suddenly on Sunday, February 22, 2026. Maureen resided for many years in Flushing, East Northport and Huntington, NY.
Maureen was born in Brooklyn, NY on July 15, 1946; the daughter of the late Joseph and Theresa (Knight) Lohan. She graduated from Saint Agnes High School and later earned a Bachelor’s degree in Education from Saint John’s University and a Master’s degree in Special Education from Hofstra University.
Maureen was a special education teacher for the NY State education department and the NYC BOE for many years and was instrumental in the lives of at risk children.
She cherished her Catholic faith and her Irish heritage and greatly admired her parents for emigrating from Ireland to the United States.
She excelled in her life and career while dealing with health challenges for most of her life. Her family is proud of the strength she displayed. She lived a long and courageous life finding joy in quiet moments. She loved books especially the lives of missionaries and saints. Maureen loved to travel and enjoyed visits to Ireland, France, Italy and Portugal. She was very observant and inquisitive and other travelers were fond of being with her.
Maureen is survived by her three brothers: William and his wife, Anne; John and his wife, Erica and Jerry. She is also survived by nieces, nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a sister in law, Cathy.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, March 23, 2026 at 11:00 AM in Saint Elizabeth Seton Church; 520 Ridgebury Road, Ridgefield, CT. Interment will take place privately in Mount Saint Mary’s Cemetery; Queens, NY and there will be no calling hours. Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Dorothy Day Hospitality House, PO Box 422 Danbury, CT 06813.
