Margaret Helen Belanger, “Peggy”, 77, of Mahopac, NY, died on Monday, October 28, 2024.
Peggy was born in St. Louis, Missouri on April 24, 1947; a daughter of the late Thomas and Helen (McHugh) Kremer. She grew up in Hicksville, New York where she graduated High School in 1965. She studied education at Western Connecticut State University where she achieved her Master’s degree. She began her career teaching in Lakeland School District in 1971 at Benjamin Franklin Elementary School, where for the majority of her career, taught First Grade.
She Married Robert Belanger in 1978 and had her first son, Shawn in that same year. In 1981, she had her second son, Bryan, and in that year the young family moved to Mahopac to the home that Margaret would raise her family in and live in for the rest of her life.
Peggy was a very involved and caring mother, raising her children in the Catholic faith, being as involved as possible in their education, and seeing them through all sorts of activities, sports, clubs, and whatever else they wished to get involved in. Whatever it was, she would always be sure to make it happen for her sons, always putting a strong emphasis on the importance of education and involvement, but above all else on being a good person to all.
Her home in Mahopac was always open to all, and was a center of social activity for her sons for years. It became a meeting place for friends, a place to play music, and will live in the memories of many who were raised in Mahopac as a safe and happy place they could always consider a second home.
After dedicating her life to education for 33 years, Peggy retired from teaching in 2004. In her retirement, Peggy greatly enjoyed volunteering and participating in programs for the elderly, as well as being a loving owner of several dogs. She was very proud of her home and her gardens and spent countless happy hours turning them into creations of great beauty.
Peggy is survived by her two sons: Bryan Belanger and his wife, Jessica; and Shawn Belanger and his wife, Melody. She is also survived by three grandchildren: Avery, Madison and Silas; her siblings, Thomas Kremer, Mark Kremer, Marie Shields, Christine Walton, Joan Rohrscheib and Nancy Herrera, as well as her former spouse, Robert Belanger.
In addition to her parents, Peggy was predeceased by her brother, Robert Kremer.
