Kathryn Louise (Moore) Fay, 94, beloved wife of the late Robert (Bob) James Fay, of Danbury, passed away peacefully in Danbury Hospital on Sunday, September 8, 2024, surrounded by loving family.
Kathryn was born in Lynchburg, Virginia on August 20, 1930. She was the daughter of the late Samuel and Edna (Harmon) Moore. Kathryn’s father was a “railroad man” giving her the opportunity to live in a number of southern towns and fostering her lifelong passion for railroads. After high school, she moved to Washington, D.C., where she worked and took accounting classes. It was at one of the many military sponsored dances that Kathryn met Bob, married in 1954, and started a family. They moved to New York and lived in the Bronx, New Rochelle, and Tuckahoe before finally settling in Danbury. It was there she raised her six boys and resided for 60 years.
While raising her family, Kathryn’s love of bookkeeping allowed her a long career with Sears Roebuck. She was most proud of being considered “a second mother” to the service and distribution staff.
Kathryn was a staunch believer in giving back and actively volunteered throughout her life. She was well known to the children and families of St. Nicholas Byzantine Church, where she taught and ran the Religious Education Program for many years. Kathryn’s passion for reading led her down the path of volunteering with South Street and Morris Street Schools, donating her time at the library and reading to the children, which she loved. Kathryn was a fixture at the Danbury Railroad Museum where many of her grandchildren experienced their first train rides. While not a big sports fan, she enjoyed following the UCONN Women basketball team. In her earlier years, she was a big fan of the old Washington Senator baseball team, where she babysat two summers for the children of Hall of Fame catcher Rick Ferrell.
Perhaps the greatest joy in Kathryn’s life came from her grandchildren. With them, she shared her love of her Irish heritage, music, animals (especially cats), baking their favorite Christmas cookies, and hosting the annual Easter Egg hunt.
She is survived by her sons; Daniel (Brenda) of Danbury, Dennis (Kathy) of Mechanicsville, Maryland, Doug (Gail) of Prospect, Eric (Jill), of Middlebury, Craig (Carol) of Danbury and Chris (Heidi) of Southington; ten grandchildren, Scott Fay, Erin Nicastro, Stacie Buhl, Kenneth Fay, Kevin Fay, Kylie Fay, Brian Fay, Stephen Schillat, Meghan Fay and Emily Fay; as well as seven great-grandchildren and numerous beloved nieces and nephews. Kathryn is predeceased by her seven siblings: Adrienne Simpson (Kenneth), Donald Moore (Dorothy), Margaret Bresnahan (Robert), Harmon Moore, Mary Gregory (Omar), Caroyln Moore, Dorothy Binns (Roger).
We would like to express our heartfelt appreciation to the nurses, doctors, and aides of Danbury Hospital, whose care and concern of Kathryn went above and beyond.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, September 12, 2024 at 10:00 AM in Saint Joseph's Church; 372 Main Street, Danbury. Interment will follow in Saint Peter's Cemetery, Danbury. There will be no calling hours.
