Joel Brett Urice

Joel Brett Urice, 74, a long-time resident of Danbury, CT, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on March 24th, 2022 after a long illness.

Joel was born on May 3rd, 1947 in Oklahoma City, OK. After he graduated from Del City High School in 1965, Joel went on to study at Oklahoma State University where he graduated with a degree in accounting and finance. He worked at Arthur Young & Company in Tulsa, OK as a certified public accountant, a career that brought him and his family to Danbury after taking a job with PepsiCo.

Joel’s great love was his wife of 56 years Cheryl Urice. Meeting in the 4th grade, their life together spanned 7 decades. They traveled the world together with St. Thomas a favorite destination; however, were just as happy sitting on their back deck enjoying the view and sounds of the surrounding nature.

Joel was an avid learner, continuing his post-grad education at Harvard Business School, and was an inducted member of MENSA. He had a lifelong passion for politics and local government, proudly serving on the Danbury Town Council and as Vice Chairman of the Danbury Planning Commission where he gave back to the community he loved. His interests also included gardening, happily sharing his latest harvests with friends and motorcycle trips with his wife to the Colorado mountains.

Joel was predeceased by his son Brett Urice and parents Virgil Urice and Orella (Millner) Hicks

. He is survived by his wife Cheryl (Cole) Urice, his son Chad (Donna) Urice, and grandsons Alec and Cameron Urice. Heis also survived by his beloved brother Ronel (Brenda) Urice, brother-in-law Jerry (Shirley) Cole, and nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Jowdy-Kane Funeral Home, 9 Granville Ave., Danbury on Sunday, May 1st, 2022, from 2 PM to 4 PM.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made in Joel’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
