Dr. Jay Joseph Weiner, age 90, of Danbury, passed away on Friday, January 9, 2026, at Danbury Hospital surrounded by his family.
Jay was born on March 16, 1935 in Philadelphia, PA, the son of David, a haberdasher, and Rhoda Weiner, a housewife. Throughout his youth he excelled in his academic studies, graduating from Central High School and earning his bachelor’s degree from Swarthmore College and his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania. For 45 years he was a beloved member of the Danbury medical community, serving as an internist in private practice and training residents in his final years at Danbury Hospital.
To his family and friends, he will best be remembered for his love of storytelling, his quick wit, and his gentle soul. To his patients and colleagues, he will be remembered as a skilled and dedicated clinician who loved the art of medicine and relished instilling in young student doctors the softer skills that foster rich patient/doctor relationships. For him, good healthcare was a right, and not a privilege. The generations of patients who came under his care will remember not only his talent as a diagnostician, but his generosity of spirit.
He loved culture in many forms, but most especially music and the ballet. He was both a wonderful singer, and maybe surprisingly to some, a serious fisherman – happy to let it be known he’d garnered a junior national surf casting championship when he was 15.
He leaves behind his wife of 56 years, Patricia; three children, Jason, Wendy and Sarah; and six cherished grandchildren, Jonas, Vera, Sol, Lev, Amanda and Sam.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the Connecticut Institute for Communities in Danbury and Congregation B’nai Israel in Danbury.
