James W. Byers of New Fairfield died from cardiac arrest on Saturday, February 27, 2021, at 90 years of age.
He attended Danbury High School, where he played football and graduated in 1948.
On October 25, 1952, while serving in the United States Marine Corps, he was married to Anita C. Byers, nee Chiapparelli. He served honorably in the Korean War, attaining the rank of corporal, before returning home in 1954.
The couple settled in New Fairfield and started A&J Sanitation, a private refuse removal company that operated in Danbury and New Fairfield until the late 1980s. Mr. Byers was active in the Republican Party in the 1970s, was a Town Committee member in New Fairfield, and was elected Justice of the Peace. He was one of the original parishioners of St. Edward the Confessor Church.
In his retirement, he enjoyed gardening, fishing, and spending time with his grandchildren. He became a widower on March 14, 2012, when Anita, the love of his life, passed away from cancer.
Mr. Byers is survived by his daughter, Patricia M. Byers, MD, and her husband, David Roth, MD of Coral Gables, FL; two sons, James W. Byers, III, MD, and his wife Stephanie Chuipek, MD of Swarthmore, PA, and Robert A. Byers, Esq. and his wife Donna L. Byers of New Fairfield; eight grandchildren, Joshua Roth, Jonathan Roth, Maria Byers, James W. Byers IV, Anna Byers, Anita Byers, Robert Byers, and Jimmy Byers; and a great-grandchild, Henry Roth.
A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday, March 5, 2021, at 10:00 am at St. Edward the Confessor Church in New Fairfield.
Interment will follow at St. Peter Cemetery in Danbury.
The family will receive friends at the Jowdy-Kane Funeral Home, 9-11 Granville Avenue, Danbury on Thursday, March 4, from 5 PM to 8 PM.
