George Mpazicos, 87, of Ridgefield, died peacefully on Monday, July 1, 2024. He was the beloved husband of Joan (Goetz) Mpazicos and devoted father of Stelanie Mpazicos.
Mr. Mpazicos was born on August 27, 1936 in the small village of Nomitsis, Greece; a son of the late Constantine and Stella (Vasilas) Mpazicos. As a child, he endured the hardships of wartime and, seeking a safer life, he emigrated to the United States with his family at the age of 10. He served his country honorably in the US Navy during the Korean War, carrying with him the resilience and perspective forged in his early years. These experiences shaped his approach to life, allowing him to live fully and vigorously, always knowing how to appreciate life and not sweat the small stuff. After his service, Mr. Mpazicos explored various jobs before discovering his entrepreneurial spirit. This led him to establish his own taxicab business in Manhattan, where he proudly operated his own medallion.
Although Mr. Mpazicos started playing sports in his 30s, he proved to be a natural athlete. He found joy in tennis, skiing, and later, golf. Even in his final days, he lived life to the fullest—playing 18 holes with the Senior Men’s golf league in Ridgefield, going to the gym, cooking delicious family dinners, and taking weekly trips to the casino for a leisurely drive and a few slots.
Mr. Mpazicos was an engaging storyteller with a wealth of experiences and a remarkable sense of humor. His outgoing, warm, and generous nature made everyone feel comfortable in his presence. He provided unwavering strength and support to his wife and daughter, who felt his love deeply every day. Joan, his beloved wife, fondly remembers him as her best friend who brought immense happiness into her life.
Mr. Mpazicos’ words of wisdom continue to resonate, encouraging his daughter to keep putting one foot in front of the other, ride the waves and be flexible, and keep the faith. Daddy, we are following your advice and miss you dearly. Rest in peace.
Mr. Mpazicos is survived by his wife of 41 years, Joan, and their daughter, Stelanie. He is also survived by his sister, Helen Weber, and his brother, Peter Mpazicos. He is preceded in death by his brother, Angelo Mpazicos, and best friend, Harvey Greenbaum.
