Eugene Tomanio Obituary

Eugene Tomanio, 93 years of age, was the son of Daniel and Lillian Scalzo Tomanio. He was a graduate of Danbury High School and joined the United States Navy during World War II. He was assigned to an ammunition ship, the USS Akutan AE13, and participated in the battle of Okinawa. He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Ribbon with two battle stars. Upon discharge from the Navy, he took employment in the hat manufacturing industry. He became a member of the Danbury Fire Department in 1954 and retired in 1983 with the rank of Assistant Chief. “Gene” as he was called, played baseball in the Danbury City League and was also a member of the Top Hat Bulldogs, a semi-pro football team. He took Evelyn Ann Kowalski as his wife and they brought four beautiful children into this world and taught them to love one and other and to be there for each other in their time of need. He was a past member of the Danbury War Memorial Board of Directors, The City of Danbury Community Action Committee, served on the Bond Issue Committee for the building of the New Street Fire Headquarters, and three new schools. He was a past member of the Richter Park Authority and Chairman of the same. He was the Republican nominee for mayor of The City of Danbury in 1985. He is a member of the VFW, The Catholic War Veterans, Danbury Association of Retired Firefighters, The Amerigo Vespucci Lodge #160 and the Richter Park Senior Golf League. He is predeceased by his wife Evelyn Ann Tomanio, their four children; Lynn Ann Meeker, Cynthia Zane, Mark Tomanio, Bonita Piche and her husband Robert, nine grandchildren; Wade Meeker, Keith Meeker, Alyson Halas and her husband John, Troy Zane, Lauren Zane, Jennifer Tomanio, Paul Tomanio, Eliese Piche and Owen Piche, 6 great grandchildren; Taylore Zane, Mila Meeker, Layla Meeker, Aidan Meeker, Hannah and Reese Halas; and his special gang of friends who he truly loved. Gene was a diehard golfer and loved his association with the Richter Park Senior Men’s League and loved the staff of Richter Park. He was a faithful volunteer at Richter Park and enjoyed every minute he was there. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 12, 2021, at 10 AM, in the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Danbury. Interment will be private in St. Peter Cemetery, Danbury.
