Dr. Carol A. Hawkes 1921-2024 Dr. Carol A. Hawkes, 102, of Danbury since 1988, passed away on June 16, 2024, at Hancock Hall.
Dr. Hawkes was born on December 28, 1921, in New York, New York, the only child of Lavinia M. (Lally) and Howard N. Hawkes
Dr. Hawkes grew up in New York City, Chicago, and Detroit and attended seven different elementary schools, as her parents moved many times in connection with her father’s employment. She graduated from Barnard College and received her Masters and PhD in English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University.
She became vice president of Hartwick College and later was installed as the third president of Endicott College in 1980.
During her tenure, Endicott transitioned from a two-year to a four-year institution.
From Endicott, she joined the staff of Western Connecticut State University from 1992 until her retirement in 2016.
While at Western Connecticut, she held various positions – Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and Founding Dean of the School of Visual and Performing Arts.
In 2012, she was awarded the Western Connecticut State University President’s Medal. She was a true academic.
Carol Ann loved to travel, to relax, and to read mystery detective novels.
She was a member of St. Gregory the Great Church, Danbury. Carol Ann never married and had no children.
She leaves neighbors, colleagues, students, clergy and parishioners of St. Gregory the Great Church, her care givers and personnel of Collins & Hannafin, all of whom she considered her friends
. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, June 21, 2024, at 11 a.m. in St. Gregory the Great Church, 85 Great Plain Rd., Danbury.
Interment will follow in St John Cemetery, Yonkers, NY.
Friends will be received in the Jowdy-Kane Funeral Home, 9 Granville Ave., Danbury on Friday from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.
