Claude Sanz Obituary

Claude E. Sanz, 87, of Ridgefield, passed away peacefully on March 5, 2021. Claude was born in Pau, France on February 5, 1934; a son of the late Germaine and Noel Sanz and brother, Max Sanz.

Claude immigrated to America at the age of sixteen and enlisted in the United States Army several years later. He started cooking for soldiers and spent most of his days in the kitchen. This is where he discovered his passion for cooking. His talent did not go unnoticed, as shortly after, Claude went on to be the private chef of a four star General. After his honorable discharge in 1959, Claude pursued his love of cooking and attended the Le Cordon Bleu Culinary School. He graduated at the age of 25 and started working as a sous chef in New York City. Claude would then become one of the youngest executive chefs in the United States, cooking at some of the most prestigious hotels in New York City. It is here he cooked for many notable figures including President John F. Kennedy, Jimmy Carter, Muhammad Ali and Leona Helmsley. He was also a proud member of the Societe Culinaire Philanthropique.

Claude first met his beloved wife, Maureen Sanz (Coulter) in 1963 while he was working at The Hotel New Yorker and they were inseparable from then on. Claude and Maureen married in 1964 and the couple settled in Bronx, NY where they raised their family and made lifelong friends. In 2008, they moved to Ridgefield, CT to be closer to their family. Claude was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed his trips with his family to Monticello, NY, Cape Cod and Florida. He loved gardening, fishing, golfing, and attending his grandchildren’s sporting events, as he was their #1 fan. He will be greatly missed.

Claude is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Maureen Sanz; his son, Claude (Frenchy), and his wife ToniAnn ; daughter, Patricia, and her husband, Leo; grandchildren Jeremy, Jillian, Jaysen, Leo, Brandon and Sabrina.
