Arthur Shane Obituary

Arthur Frank Shane was born in Brooklyn in 1930 to Jewish parents Julius and Bessie Shane at the height of the Great Depression. His teen years were dominated by the news from World War II and the music of the big band jazz era, for which he developed a life-long love. He attended the Bronx High School of Science where he excelled as a distance runner. He was an English literature major at Columbia University where he also continued his running career, eventually taking first place at the state level in middle-distance events.

While attending Columbia, Arthur met Miriam “Mimi” Lind, who was attending nearby Barnard College. They married in 1956 and settled down in Manhattan’s upper west side where Arthur launched his career on Wall Street writing market analyses for a commodity brokerage house. The early 1960’s saw the arrival of their three children, Hugh, Jennifer and Benjamin.

A growing family and a prosperous career led them to a new home in the suburb of Pleasantville, where the family enjoyed the benefits of a close-knit small town that was only a train ride from the cultural life of New York City.

Arthur continued his career on Wall Street where he eventually became Vice President of a commodity futures trading department at ACLI, one of the world’s largest privately-owned merchant organizations.

After Arthur’s retirement, and with the kids grown and on their own, Arthur and Mimi moved to the northern Westchester County hamlet of South Salem, where they would live for the remainder of their lives, enjoying local cultural events, long walks on the country roads, swimming and canoeing on nearby Lake Oscaleta, and doting on their grandchildren when they came to visit. These years also saw them traveling frequently to Munich, Germany where Benjamin and his growing family lived, as well as to Tucson, Arizona where they would escape from the cold New York winters. Their road trips between New York and Arizona were also occasions to visit Hugh and his family who were living in the wilds of southeast Idaho.

Arthur is preceded in death by his sister Rita and his wife Mimi. He will always be loved and remembered by his three children and his eight grandchildren, Dustin, Collin, Juliette, William, Nadine, Rebecca, Vivian, and Hazel.
