Alice (Esther) Newton

Alice Esther Newton, best known as Esther, 89, of New Fairfield, wife of the late George P. Newton Sr., died on Wednesday, February 10, 2021 at her home. Esther was born in Danbury, March 24, 1931, the daughter of Alice Victoria (Peterson) and Gustav Iver Johnson. She attended Danbury schools and was a graduate of Danbury High School with the Class of 1949. An area resident most of her life, Esther was associated with her daughter Sue Ann in the Barn Gallery. An active member of the Congregational Church of New Fairfield, she was a member of the church choir, flower committee, service club, and the Women’s Church Club. For 31 years, Mrs. Newton co-chaired the annual church bazaar along with Helen Middleton. She also held the position of Church financial secretary. A person of immense creativity, she was best known to be a seamstress, quilter, enjoyed needlework and baking; especially cakes for special occasions. She immersed herself in her talents with the complete encouragement of her family In addition to her daughter Sue Ann Newton of New Fairfield, with whom she made her home, she is survived by two sons, Robert A. Newton and his wife Kathy of Warren, CT, and George P. Newton Jr. and his wife Lydia of Southington, CT, four grandchildren Benjamin and wife Silvia, James and wife Kristin, Jeffrey, and Tracy. She was also blessed with great-grandchildren, Isabella, Everett, and Josiah. Graveside funeral services and burial will take place on Saturday, February 13, 2021, at 2 PM in the Mountain View Cemetery, New Fairfield with the Rev. Elizabeth Yoho, Senior Minister, of the Congregational Church of New Fairfield officiating. Facial coverings and social distancing will be observed.
