Agnes (Sweeney) Dunn

Agnes (Sweeney) Dunn of Ridgefield, CT, passed away peacefully on June 3, 2021. “Mom,” “Gram,” and “Gram-Gram” was the generous and caring matriarch of a family of 28: 6 children, 12 grandchildren and 10 (1/2) great-grandchildren.

She was born in 1927 to Eugene and Angela Sweeney of Yonkers, NY. A graduate of Gorton High School and Katherine Gibbs, Agnes worked as a secretary/administrative assistant before marrying Lee Dunn in 1951. They traveled the country during his commission in the army, before settling back in Yonkers in 1953 and later relocating to Ridgefield, CT in 1971.

A stay-at-home mom to her six children, Agnes was a skilled seamstress, gardener, a girl scout and boy scout leader, a rabid Giants fan, and a consummate hostess. She also was a life-long learner, attending Western Connecticut State University as an adult to study history (her passion), before embarking on a 25-year long career at Coldwell Banker. After her retirement, Agnes volunteered at Meals on Wheels and was a member of Founders Hall, where she continued to take history and current events classes.

Agnes loved being with her family and always made time to host family parties, attend children’s and grandkids’ sporting events, recitals, concerts and plays, as well as plan back-to-school shopping sprees. One of her major legacies is the 20+ years of renting summer beach houses on LBI so that her entire family could spend time together. 

Agnes was predeceased by her husband, her six siblings and her daughter Eileen Lennox. This remarkable woman will be sadly missed by daughters Marguerite Hefferon, Ellen Carpenter, Elizabeth Gabriele, Jeannine Sieban, son Lee Dunn and all her grandkids and great-grandkids.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Meals on Wheels or Founders Hall of Ridgefield.
